HarryChapin.com March, 2001 E-mail
Hey everyone,
Thanks for signing up for the HarryChapin.com mailing list. I'll pass along
any news or events I hear about, but no more than once every month or two,
unless something urgent comes up.
A few things going on which I'd like to pass on ...
* Frank Walker is releasing a CD of his own music, and will cover a couple
Chapin tunes at the event. This is in the New York City area:
http://www.harrychapin.com/news/03222001.shtml
* Scott Sivakoff, a very musically talented fan of Harry's, will be doing a
small show of Harry's music at MUGZ in New London, CT. I may try to make
this show, although that may not be possible as I'm in school in Washington,
DC. MUGZ is a really cool coffee house in downtown New London. Details:
http://www.harrychapin.com/board/messages/126.shtml
* The Local United Network to Combat Hunger (LUNCH) will be putting on a
Chapin Tribute Show in May. http://www.harrychapin.com/news/03052001.shtml
* I'm told that only about 80 copies of "Onwards and Upwards" remain. (This
is a CD of rare Chapin music put out by the Harry Chapin Foundation.) You
can contact the Chapin Office for more information.

* Lies and Legends: The Musical Stories of Harry Chapin is playing in
Virginia and Ohio right now I believe (although the run may just be coming
to an end). There's some info in the News section of the Web site.

* Amazon.com is showing that the reprint of Taxi: The Harry Chapin Story is
in stock. You can check it out here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0806521910/theharrychapinar ... I
haven't ordered it myself yet, but I'm told that there are a few different
things in this edition.
So lots of good stuff going on! Let me know if you know of any other Chapin
events, or as per usual, have anything you'd like to donate to the Web site
(photos, stories, etc.).
Have a great weekend,
Brian Bieluch

The Latest Release

Sniper & Other Love Songs
[iTunes]
In 1972, Harry released
Sniper & Other Love Songs.
Thirty years would pass before the album would ever reach the CD format. Sniper was finally re-released in June, 2002.
Originally given a working title of Sweet City Suite, the album tells the story of various characters one might run into in
a city. The album features the original studio versions of Chapin classics "A Better Place to Be" and "Circle." But
perhaps more importantly (as those songs are already well-distributed on compilation CDs), the album features seemingly
lost Chapin stories, including "And the Baby Never Cries," "Burning Herself," "Barefoot Boy," and "Woman Child."
Sniper is for the seasoned Chapin fan. New fans would do better to check out
Greatest Stories
Live. But for Chapin fans who have reached the level of the
Dance Band on the Titanic album, this is the next step. Slightly over-produced and having a little of the "forced"
feel that some of Harry's studio albums possess, this album does not capture the powerfully live Harry Chapin. Nonetheless,
it captures Harry's great iconoclastic songwriting--Harry takes the story song to new heights here. But the album works best
for those ready for it; don't buy it until you are ready to appreciate it!
